BRIEF: -
In a major breakthrough, the staff of PS New Ashok Nagar, East District, arrested two accused persons—Rohit Gupta and his cousin Gaurav Gupta—for orchestrating a staged snatching of ₹5.15 lakh cash from the complainant near New Ashok Nagar Metro Station. The incident occurred during a planned cash transaction inside a vehicle under the guise of currency exchange. Rohit, the mastermind, conspired with three others, including Gaurav and two absconding associates, Piyush and Chintu, to execute the fake robbery. Through extensive technical surveillance and analysis of over 60 CCTV cameras, the police identified the vehicle used and traced the accused to Agra and Delhi. A total of ₹3.5 lakh in cash and the Maruti Baleno car used in the crime were recovered. The motive was to fraudulently acquire the money through a pre-planned act of deception. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accused.
INCIDENT: -
On 16.06.2025, a complaint was received at Police Station New Ashok Nagar regarding a case of snatching involving a substantial amount of cash and a mobile phone near New Ashok Nagar Metro Station. The complainant, Shivansh, a resident of Samarkunj Apartments near Dashrathpuri Metro Station, Delhi, reported that he had come to New Ashok Nagar to meet an acquaintance, identified as Rohit Gupta. The purpose of the meeting was to convert a sum of approximately ₹5.15 lakhs from his bank account into hard cash. As per the complainant’s statement, the transaction took place inside a Baleno car (Registration No. UP80EU****) belonging to Rohit Gupta. After transferring the money to Gupta’s account, Shivansh received the cash from him. However, immediately after stepping out of the car, three unidentified individuals with muffled faces arrived on a TVS scooter and forcefully snatched his bag containing ₹5.15 lakhs in cash along with his mobile phone. The assailants fled the spot in the direction of Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Based on the complainant’s statement, a case vide FIR No. 290/25 dated 16.06.2025 under sections 304(2)/3(5) of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) has been registered at PS New Ashok Nagar and investigation was taken up.
INVESTIGATION: -
During the investigation, a dedicated team comprising IO/SI Anshul, SI Tanuj, PSI Vinay, and HC Vijay from PS New Ashok Nagar, East District was constituted under the close supervision of SHO/New Ashok Nagar and overall guidance of ACP/Kalyanpuri with specific instructions to investigate a suspicious incident involving snatching and cheating.
The team initiated a detailed technical surveillance operation and examined over 60 CCTV camera footages. Through meticulous analysis, the vehicle used in the commission of the crime was identified as a Maruti Baleno (Reg. No. UP80EU***), registered to one Krishan, a resident of Kotwali, Agra. During the probe, it was also discovered that a person named Rohit Gupta, who was initially associated with the complainant, had gone incommunicado and was also a resident of Agra raising serious suspicion. Upon further investigation, the complainant expressed doubts about Rohit Gupta’s conduct. His mobile phone had remained switched off throughout, and his behaviour at the time of the incident was questionable, particularly his lack of action when the complainant pleaded for help during the crime. Based on leads gathered through CCTV footage, car registration data, and suspicious conduct, the team, with the assistance of Agra local police, launched a raid. Persistent efforts led to the identification of the accused’s hideouts in Agra and Trilokpuri, Delhi. Following coordinated operations, both Rohit Gupta and his cousin Gaurav Gupta were apprehended on 18.06.2025. During sustained interrogation, it was revealed that Rohit Gupta, who deals in foreign currency and air travel bookings, masterminded the entire plan to cheat and rob the complainant during a cash transaction. He roped in his cousin Gaurav by promising a lucrative share. Together, they included two more accomplices—Piyush and Chintu, residents of Kalyanpuri—who were assigned to execute the snatching.
As per the plan:
• A Torq scooter with a defaced number plate was arranged.
• Gaurav rode the scooter while Piyush and Chintu snatched the bag containing ₹5.15 lakh from the complainant.
• After committing the offence, they fled the scene on the scooter.
• Rohit, instead of assisting the complainant, feigned urgency, debarred him from the car midway, and abandoned him.
Following the arrest, a recovery of ₹3.5 lakh in cash and the Maruti Baleno car (UP80EU5***) used in the crime was effected. Efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the remaining accused, Piyush and Chintu, who are currently absconding. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
